Etsy’s holiday forecast is not pointing toward quiet, generic gifting. The marketplace says shoppers are moving toward visible craftsmanship, highly personal gifts, dramatic styling, and activities people can do together.

Etsy published its Fall and Winter 2026 Seller Trend Report on October 14. The report draws on Etsy search and sales activity from the three months ending September 14, compared with the same period a year earlier unless otherwise noted. It also incorporates broader cultural forecasting and the work of Etsy’s first guest trend editor, Mandy Lee.

The numbers sellers should notice

  • Searches for DIY activities rose 8,500%.
  • Personalized friend gifts increased 1,400% year over year.
  • Ruffle tablecloth searches climbed 841%.
  • Hand-painted items rose 280%, while hand-woven items increased 230%.

A move away from “safe” holiday merchandise

The clearest message in the report is that safe-looking merchandise may struggle to earn attention. Etsy calls one of the leading themes Merrymaxxing: rhinestones, saturated color, playful ornaments, and decoration that is deliberately excessive. Searches for bedazzled kits rose 218%, while whimsy items increased 110%.

This does not mean every seller should add rhinestones to an unrelated product. The useful lesson is about merchandising: holiday shoppers appear more willing to buy an object with a clear personality. A neutral product shot, a vague title, and a broad “Christmas gift” tag may hide the very detail that makes a handmade item worth paying for.

The handmade signal is becoming part of the product

Another trend, Mark of the Maker, is more important than its name suggests. Etsy reports strong growth for hand-painted, hand-woven, and hand-thrown items. Visible stitching, uneven edges, brushwork, and other traces of process are being treated as proof of value rather than defects to conceal.

For a seller, this changes what belongs in the image gallery. The polished front view still matters, but it should not be the whole story. A close-up of the texture, a hand at work, or a short making video can answer the buyer’s unspoken question: “Why is this different from a mass-produced version?” Etsy itself recommends process imagery and specific descriptors such as hand-embroidered, needlepoint, handwoven, or visible mending when they accurately describe the item.

Gifting is widening beyond the traditional family list

The report’s Family Reimagined theme reflects a broader gift list: friends, pets, neighbors, and chosen family. Searches for personalized friend gifts were up 1,400% year over year, pet-gifting searches doubled, and sales of Friendsmas party supplies increased 37%.

That is a useful demand signal for sellers who already offer personalization. Instead of adding dozens of new products, it may be more practical to create new listing photos and occasions around an existing item: a pet ornament shown on a tree, a friend-group set shown together, or a custom portrait presented as a gift rather than wall decor. The product can stay the same while the buying context becomes clearer.

Craft kits may be the most actionable opportunity

The most eye-catching figure is the 8,500% increase in searches for DIY activities. Etsy labels the theme Craftmas, describing holiday craft nights as an alternative to a conventional party. Beginner sewing patterns rose 125%, and needlepoint-bag interest among Gen Z shoppers increased 470%.

Large percentages can come from a small starting base, so sellers should not treat them as a guaranteed sales forecast. Still, the behavior behind the number is credible: buyers are not only shopping for a finished object; they are shopping for an evening, a shared activity, or a gift someone can complete themselves.

A good kit listing should make the experience easy to understand. Show everything that arrives in the box, the skill level, the likely completion time, and the finished result. Missing one small item can turn a festive activity into a support request, so a photographed contents checklist is often more persuasive than decorative copy.

What I would change in an Etsy shop this week

  1. Audit the first two gallery images. On mobile, those images must show the product’s strongest texture, color, or personalization detail without requiring a zoom.
  2. Build occasion-specific variants carefully. Friend gifts, pet gifts, and group sets can expand the addressable audience without forcing a completely new product line.
  3. Test a kit before scaling it. Pack and complete the activity exactly as a buyer would. Record where instructions, tools, or quantities create friction.
  4. Use trend language only when it is accurate. Adding “maximalist” or “vintage brooch” to an unrelated listing may attract the wrong click and weaken conversion.
  5. Protect the dispatch promise. Personalized and handmade holiday orders take longer. Set realistic processing times before a sales event creates a queue the shop cannot clear.

Sellers adding holiday volume should also review the shipping workflow before promotion begins. Our comparison of Etsy Labels, Shippo, and ShipStation explains when the native label flow is enough and when a separate shipping system starts saving real time.

The important caveat

Etsy says its demographic insights are directional and come from a subset of signed-in U.S. buyers. Search growth also measures interest, not guaranteed sales. A rising query can be useful for product planning, but it cannot replace a seller’s own conversion rate, margins, production capacity, and delivery record.

The strongest way to use the report is as a filter, not a command. Choose the one trend that already fits the materials, style, and customers of the shop, then make that connection more visible. Chasing all seven would produce a confused storefront. Showing the handmade value of the right products could produce a much better holiday season.
