Temu and Amazon can place the same product in front of a large audience, but they ask the seller to run two different businesses. The biggest difference is not traffic. It is who controls the retail price, catalog, fulfillment promise, and customer experience.
A seller should not decide between Temu and Amazon by comparing commission headlines alone. Temu’s local seller offers vary by market, while Amazon separates selling-plan fees, referral fees, optional advertising, and fulfillment costs. The real comparison is contribution margin after every operational requirement.

1. Pricing Control Is the Structural Difference
Amazon Seller Central lets merchants set an offer price and, on the Professional plan, use Automate Pricing rules across a catalog. Amazon then deducts the applicable selling plan, referral fee, fulfillment, storage, advertising, or optional service costs.
ChannelEngine’s Temu documentation describes a different flow: the merchant provides a base or supply price excluding VAT, and Temu uses that value to determine the sale price shown to buyers. A list price can also support strikethrough presentation.
That difference changes margin governance. On Amazon, the seller needs a floor price and repricing logic. On Temu, the seller needs a minimum acceptable supply price and a way to reconcile the eventual payout against discounts, taxes, shipping arrangements, penalties, refunds, and seller-funded promotion components.
2. Amazon Offers More Fulfillment Models
Fulfillment by Amazon stores inventory, picks, packs, ships, handles customer service, and processes returns. Sellers can also use Fulfilled by Merchant for heavy, slow-moving, temperature-sensitive, or operationally controlled products. Hybrid operations are common.
Temu’s Seller Center describes flexible fulfillment and integrated logistics solutions, but availability and commercial details differ by country. ChannelEngine documents both self-fulfillment and Temu-provided shipping labels for supported orders.
Amazon is the clearer choice when the seller specifically wants a mature outsourced fulfillment network and Prime eligibility. Temu can be attractive when a local warehouse already performs well and the seller wants a new demand channel without duplicating inventory into another network.
3. Catalog Work Behaves Differently
Temu’s strict early mapping makes a controlled pilot especially important. Sending thousands of SKUs before validating category, dimensions, origin, compliance IDs, and variant structure can create a larger cleanup than the launch itself.
4. Fees Need Different Models
Amazon’s US pricing page publishes a $0.99 per-item Individual plan and a $39.99 monthly Professional plan. Referral percentages vary by category. FBA adds fulfillment and storage costs, while ads and other programs add optional spend.
Temu advertises no registration fee and, in some local seller markets, promotional offers such as zero commission or covered shipping. Those claims are market-specific and can change. ChannelEngine explicitly directs sellers to the Temu Seller Center for current commission, payout, and other costs.
I would build one contribution-margin sheet per market. Include product cost, packaging, inbound freight, pick and pack, outbound shipping, marketplace deductions, advertising, expected returns, damage, penalties, currency effects, tax, and support labor. Use the contract and settlement report, not a landing-page headline.
5. International Expansion Has Different Friction
Temu integrations may require a separate channel, contract, and access token per country or region. The operational benefit is explicit market configuration; the cost is duplicated setup, mapping, monitoring, and token renewal.
Amazon offers Global Selling and multiple FBA international paths. Remote Fulfillment with FBA can use US inventory to serve Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, while Pan-European FBA distributes stock across eligible EU countries. These options simplify some logistics but introduce tax, product eligibility, storage, and cross-border cost decisions.
A 30-Day Channel Test
- Select 20 to 50 proven SKUs with accurate dimensions, origin, compliance files, and stable replenishment.
- Exclude one-of-one, made-to-order, fragile, or support-heavy items until the operating path is proven.
- Create a channel-specific margin model and a minimum acceptable contribution per delivered order.
- Track listing approval rate, time to first sale, cancellation, late shipment, delivery, return, refund, and support contacts.
- Measure cash timing from order to available payout, not merely gross merchandise value.
- Review customer complaints by cause: product mismatch, quality, size, packaging, delivery, or expectation.
- Expand only when the channel produces profitable delivered orders without degrading service elsewhere.
Final Verdict
Temu is not a cheaper Amazon, and Amazon is not simply a higher-priced Temu. Temu can offer rapid access to value-driven demand but gives the seller a different level of retail-price and marketplace control. Amazon charges a more visible stack of fees while offering broader pricing, advertising, brand, and fulfillment infrastructure.
A capable seller may use both: Amazon for branded search, Prime, and catalog depth; Temu for a carefully selected value assortment. Keep the inventory and profitability layers outside either marketplace so channel volume never becomes the only version of success.
